While Agathi believes he's paid off enough of the planet's ne'er-do-wells to keep his facility safe, he's wrong!

Several independent groups have been hired to crack the facility and seize the precious research on a new neural interface that will transform the control of BattleMechs and AeroSpace fighters.

Also, House Kurita has dispatched elements of the Shin Legion on a search and seizure mission to Port Krin for just this same reason!

The stage is set, but the full list of players remains hazy. Who will end up possessing this invaluable lostech and the technological wonders born from it?

Time, and battles, will tell.
A Liao unit who in the 3060s went over to Kurita over some base betrayal. Their colors are a deep green trimmed with yellow, and they have a really neat unit insignia:

So I ordered some decals for them from Fighting Pirannha. In the meantime I am working on the paint scheme and model selection, and since it's going to be a Capellan/Draconis unit, I wanted to have a healthy mix of those two state's iconic units--Vindicators and Panthers! I am a big proponent of doubles and triples in Alpha Strike/BattleTech units. I think any normal military unit would field as many duplicate 'Mechs as possible to facilitate repair, spare parts, and logistics.

So I intend to have at least three Vindicators and two Panthers as the backbone of this 12 'Mech Shin Legion company. I will also include a 70-ton Cataphract as part of the unit's main muscle. It's a distinctly Capellan 'Mech and I love the revised plastic model. I also used it as the first test paint model for the unit.

Here it is pictured with some Angel Barracks 6mm sci-fi characters:

I used a Russian Green Surface Primer from Vallejo, and then built up from there. All this 'Mech needs are its numbers and decals, and it's ready for battle! I may also include some weathering too.

With its emphasis on 45-ton Vindicators and 35-ton Panthers, my Shin Legion company is going to be on the lighter side, but very maneuverable with all of the jump capability. I am debating whether or not to include a 90-ton Cyclops as a command 'Mech, or just make this Cataphract the centerpiece and build in lighter units around it.

This unit planning stage really makes Alpha Strike fun for me; I love the thinking and storytelling that goes into a force's creation. I'll be sure to share more as I go along!

Thanks for reading!
It was time to settle scores.

As each commander jockeyed for position, the two command lances of each main company found themselves in direct conflict. The battle was joined in earnest!

A pair of 5th EC Quickdraw QKD-Cs take cover.

Each force (about 160 pts. per side) quickly sought cover as they advanced. For Kurita, General Nagumo's orders were clear--death or dishonor.

Combined fire from Kgosi's Swayback and Riggs' Quickdraw bring the Grand Dragon down!

As the battle ranged, the Kurita forces drew the EC into a high-stakes, all or nothing game of total destruction! [Stu claimed Kurita honor to forgo the Forced Withdrawal rules, and I agreed this was super-cool, so despite some lucky shots on my part that left his reinforced lance hurting, we played on!]

Drunk, crazed, or both, Yandorak and his QKD-C jump into deadly close quarters!

Gallant Kurita Guillotine fights to the last! Honor was served!

In the end, the Kurita forces lost, but they upheld their honor to the last. While the EC won, they paid a terrible price, with Kgosi Z. and Gord Riggs injured, and Z.'s Swayback HBK-5P a total loss! They did salvage Riggs' Quickdraw and the Kurita Catapult and Guillotine, so Kgosi Z. will not join the ranks of the dispossessed!

Will Nagumo first seek vengeance against Wagner's Legion (the mercs who deserted him)? or will he again try for the lostech cache, this time back on the EC's home planet of Dneiper?

While this chapter of the campaign draws to a close, the larger story remains unfinished!

Thanks to Stu for a great game!
The recovered tech was not in fact the drive, merely junk! Furious, general Nagumo ordered his second in command, Arata Ito, to swiftly pursue and retrieve the lostech. Mounting his No-Dachi, Arata gathered a pursuit force and quickly set out.

Sending off the lighter mechs with the precious tech, the remaining Vistula Guard prepared for the worst.

Fire exchanged between both units was fierce, as the close-in fighting offered little opportunity to miss. It appeared both sides had suffered equally, until Ayaka Kito, piloting a panther, delivered a fatal shot to the Guards banshee. Hitting the ammo stores, the mech exploded in a momentous blast, offering little hope that the pilot had escaped alive.

Arata drove his men onward, determined to destroy as much of the enemy as possible. Without proper support, the units were harried to the riverside, and made a final stand on it's banks. Fire from the pursuit lances crippled first the Guard Zeus, and then the Orion. Charging forward, Arata cleaved off the arm of the enemy Zeus, before driving it deep into the mechs torso. Yet the Zeus pilot was not one to take this quietly. Blasting all he had, he managed to destroy Arata's No-Dachi and force him to eject!
A telling blow had been struck, but allowing the objective to escape could spell disaster. The enemy could easily slip away, and the prize lost with them.StuSurgenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07808438617805540648noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1679875356756550722.post-48353742099207085872015-08-13T04:34:00.001-07:002015-08-13T04:34:43.836-07:00Musings On The Campaign Storyline...

My Cicada, Sky's awesome Coolant Truck!

I'm off to do Wilderness EMT training this weekend, so no campaign games for me! I've been talking with Sky about our recent epic throwdown for the DropShip. I was lucky. He failed just enough rolls, and I made just enough rolls, to cause him some real financial pain in terms of his company's ability to recover from the battle.

Losing his Jaegermech was big. Having to repair and rearm most of his unit is big. So what would a merc unit like Wagner's Legion do? Go rogue. That's what we decided. They're going to break with their Kurita employers, do a murderous raid on Mining Hab 101, then flee the region with whatever booty they can haul.

In effect, they'll become Periphery pirates. Sky and I will fight one last battle, but I will run an under-strength lance of local 'Mechs maintained by the ragtag miners of Hab 101. Sky will attack in force with his weakened mercs, and we'll see what happens.

Meanwhile, Dave needs to recover from his disastrous throwdown with Stu's Kurita (battle rep, gentlemen?), and then the 5th Dneiper Explorer Corps needs to stage some kind of climactic battle with Kurita to close down this first story arc of the campaign.

So lots to think about!

Going through the "lost tech" 'Mechs, I discovered I was unable to identify several of them. So I am asking help here.

This one I am fairly certain of. I identify it as a Vindicator. Am I right?

The next one is an "I don't know". It is armed similar to Battlemaster with an underslung PPC on its arm and missile launcher on the shoulder, but it is not a Battlemaster. Anyone know?

Lost Tech Found by Vistula Guard

While exploring the ancient ruins on Risin's second moon, elements of the Vistula Guard stumbled on a secret cache. When they managed to bypass the old security systems and open the aged vault they were amazed at what they discovered.

It was the Mother Lode.

Inside, stored in perfect condition were 12 'Mechs. That was three lances worth of the fighting machines. An entire company!

Here are a few vid captures of the treasure trove. The 'Mechs are arranged in size order, more or less.

Now to be clear, this is what I have painted. Not what I am fielding in our current campaign. What I am fielding is considerably less. The fielded units represent the Vistula Guard as they first started out; a reinforced company.

Dave and I will each take an objective. We won't know until we have time analyze it which one is the actual prize.

Dave, you Stu will play one Pursuit scenario.

Sky and I will play the second. Ours will be modified and "storified" if you will. Sky's forces will have beaten me to my DropShip and seized it. We have a model for this, so the battle will take place in and around the DropShip.

Stu, if you and Dave want to add some cool stuff of your own, please do!
Today I picked up a neat piece from Micro Art Studio that will help us do just that!

It's their 28mm Generator, but what passes for a sci-fi generator in 28mm makes a damn fine Arcology in 6mm, at least IMHO. What do you folks think?

Sky, care to try your hand (and your airbrush) at painting this sucker for Sunday's game?

Thanks!
This time I am not revealing it until we play on Sunday! I will say that in thinking about Shango Agathi, the mysterious multi-billionaire who funds the Dneiper Explorer Corps, I've developed his backstory to the point where he maintains close relations with House Marik and the Free Worlds League. This gives him access to more exotic tech that might otherwise be unavailable in the Outworlds Alliance.

This will be reflected in two types of units in my 5th Company of the EC. I am thinking I can get what I need painted tonight to pull this off, but we shall see!
Non-'Mech Elements of the Vistula Guard

I have been painting like a crazy man, something I haven't done in some time. I am usually a very leisurely painter. But, Alpha Strike has me excited.

Here are a couple of pics of some of the stuff coming off my paint station.

These are non-'Mech elements. They come from the Mechanized Battalion of the Vistula Guard. Elements like these seldom deploy alone or in their own units. Rather the units or elements are parceled out to the 'Mech Battalions on an as needed basis. Colonel Dillon is a firm believer and a skilled tactician of combine operations.

First up are two assault tanks:

Anybody care to knock up a roster sheet for our companies?

Something we can record the following info on (in rows/columns):

* Pilot Name
* 'Mech or AeroSpace Fighter Type and tonnage
* Vehicle tonnage
* Major vehicle damage
* Notes Field: Rank, Injuries, Notable Accomplishments

If we had this as a fillable PDF it would be awesome!

I checked my old, classic FASA Mercenary's Handbook, and it has a few neat tables I will show you guys on Sunday, but it's not quite what we need.

Anybody game?

P. S. I will say, reading that Merc Handbook, with all of the awesome Jeff Laubenstein artwork, brought back a flood of wonderful gaming memories!
Outworlds Alliance
Sunday, 8 / 2 / 3071
0830 Hours Standard

Just a few jumps away from Dneiper, the 5th Explorer Corps follows up a rumor of a lostech cache on Lycos II, one of the famed "Twin Moons" of the planet Risin. Terra-formed during the heyday of the Star League, Lycos II now counts as a "dead" world, the massive machines that fed its atmosphere with its Earth-like mix of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide long since destroyed or dismantled. But while it can no longer be the haven for agriculture and aquaculture it once was, this lonely satellite still stubbornly clings to life. A few rugged colonists, the descendants of the moon's original settlers and geo-scientists, still remain.

The Corps follows their lead to Lycos II's most verdant continental valley, to the site of a once thriving mining town called Klondike. Here it became legend that a distant relative of the OA's ruling Avellar family funded a rogue energy project to create a more complete neural linkage to better meld the MechWarrior or AeroJock and his or her machine. Rumors persisted for centuries that this project and the fruits of its labor wound up at a black site under Klondike--an abandoned mine turned into a hidden research facility!

Does a prototype of the Avellar Neural Net exist? Is it hidden away beneath Klondike? Opposing forces must battle it out to find the truth!

Campaign Notes

This session will consist of two linked battles. The first will be a small Meeting Engagement between Light 'Mechs and infantry in the hidden mine research facility under the town of Klondike. This will be built on 33% of each side's total force. We'll need an objective marker that represents a technological stash grabbed from the site. The winner gets to claim this.

The second battle will be a Pursuit with the winner of the first battle joining his larger force and making a run for it with the tech stash. This battle will consist of 75% of each side's total force, and the pursued force must include surviving units from the first battle.

As a bonus for winning the first battle, the pursued force gains +1 on initiative for Turn 1.

Let me know what you guys think!
Setting is loosely 3050s - early 3060s.

I took a bunch of pics, so I will show them here. We used all of the basic and advanced rules, but did not employ variable damage. Awesome game, all around!

Above elements of the 5th assemble to defend a research installation on Dneiper. I fielded 259 pts.--8 'Mechs and 1 unit of infantry.

Above a close-up shot of the 5th units who participated in the battle. Captain Geoff Yandorak calls the shots from his Atlas!

A hothead at the con, Corporal Quai-Lung did not know that the battle would call more upon her Hatchetman's stand-off anti-air capability than her machine's eponymous melee weapon!

Above a shot of MechWarrior Charon Crawford in his 60 ton Quickdraw QKD-8K--he would find himself in the thick of the battle in short order!

A raiding force of Kurita 'Mechs and mercenary 'Mech and Aerospace elements landed on Dneiper in the dead of night! Their goal? Seize valuable research data and hardware from the Carnegie Center For Science and Innovation nestled in the bucolic countryside of the planet's central continent.

Pictured above, Falon's Wood--it would become a central scene in the pitched assault on the Center! Madsen's Flea FLE-17 streaks headlong into it to scout the oncoming foe...

Above, as scientists and workers scurry for the safety of the Center's panic bunkers, Captain Yandorak lumbers ahead in his 100 ton Atlas AS7-S, and the 5th's intrepid infantry take up positions in one of the facility's buildings.

Above a Kurita Grand Dragon fords the Sage River! A Guillotine approaches behind him, and a Panther flanks and provides withering covering fire. The enemy is upon us!

Above, elements of the 5th take up defensive positions in Falon Wood, the Guiilotine strikes after jumping the river, and the Merc Aerospace elements make the first of three deadly strafing/bombing runs!

Above, a view of the battle from one of the Center's aerial recon drones! Due to severe damage from the Merc Aerospace, Madsen and his Flea had to, well, flee!

Above, another deadly strafing run from those pesky Merc fighters! Salazar's Orion ON1-MA used its Flak to good advantage, scoring a hit on the fighter, but the skilled pilot stayed airborne!

Above, Quai-Lung's Hatchetman HCT-5S fires on and hits the second enemy Aerospace fighter, but the Merc keeps his cool and remains in flight! Meanwhile, Madsen narrowly avoids total destruction from the strafing run--speed is armor!

Above, Quai-Lung and the 5th's infantry fend off a flanking Quickdraw as the Kurita Atlas lumbers into deadly medium range! Also, that pesky fighter makes its last run!

Meanwhile, combined fire destroys the Kurita Guillotine, but not before he blows up Veronica Beck's Commando COM-5S!

Above, with the Guillotine dispatched and Beck safely ejected from her burning machine, Crawford's Quickdraw and Kwint Savak's Vindicator VND-3L leap from Falon Wood and land behind the Merc Zeus and prepare to blast him!

They strip him of all of his Armor and get into his Structure, but they cannot put the kibosh on the stubborn Merc warrior!

At this point both Aerospace fighters were stripped of all armor and refused to make further runs. The Merc Zeus also fled rather than risking dispossession, and the Kurita raiding force pulled back, driven off by the stiff resistance of the 5th Dneiper Explorer Corps! Beck's Commando was salvaged, but the Kurita Guillotine proved too far gone to reclaim. The 5th had to content themselves with knowing they had successfully defended the Carnegie Center For Science and Innovation!

A Quick Game

Two Sundays ago my friend Skye and I played a quick pick up game of Alpha Strike. Skye started out with his mechs in a prepared defensive position while I was tasked to make a hasty assault and take the position. I had a few more points than he did, but they didn't do me much good as you will see.

(Skye's Awesome 80 ton mech in a prepared defense position)

I started my assault by moving on the right flank of his position. I had to cross a small river to get to it. The board was mostly devoid of cover, but it did have a few terrain features that provided partial cover from some angles.

As moved forward and the Atlas lumbered forward, Skye sent some of his mechs off to move onto my right flank. I decided that this was more of a diversion and would deal with it if it became a problem and continued pushing towards my actual objective.

(My assault on Skye's position continues)

As we entered firing range the critical part of this engagement unfolded. Skye concentrated his fire on one mech at a time. His firing (dice rolls) were lethal. He managed to destroy my 80 ton Zeus in three turns of firing. On the other hand, I only made two hits the entire time I was closing.

By this time Skye's mechs on the flank were closing to firing range. Again concentrating his fire, this time on my Atlas, he began to peel away at the assault mech's armor.

After the destruction of the Zeus and the lethal fire coming from my flank, I decided the smart thing to do was to make an ordered withdrawal and to come back and take the position with a planned assault with more force.

As I withdrew Skye's continued to fire effectively on my Atlas. My return fire remained hopeless. Smelling the blood of an Atlas, Skye closed with the flanking mechs.

Again concentrating on the Atlas he managed to strip it of its armor and into the structure. He also scored a critical hit to its movement rate. But, finally, my shooting improved. His flanking Hunchback got a little too close and I managed to shred it with fire from my Atlas. After that he decided to let my force withdraw.

Total, I lost a Zeus and had an Atlas all but destroyed. He came out with a damaged Awesome and a Hunchback in critical condition. Because I withdrew he would have been able to recover the salvage from my dead Zeus. The pilot escaped however. So a clear victory for Skye. I decided my force commander would be having some words with whoever was in charge of maintaining his mech's targeting computers.

It was a good game. We both had fun. Here's the best thing. The entire engagement took 40 minutes from start to finish. I love Alpha Strike.
It does this by not tracking the details of the individual systems of the mechs and other weapon systems in BattleTech. Rather, it tracks the effects of those systems and applies those effects to the game.

For example, in BattleTech itself each individual section of armor is tracked. As you shoot at a 'Mech, the exact location of any hits are determined and the appropriate section of armor is checked off as it takes damage. In Alpha Strike a mech just has an overall armor value. When all the armor is gone, the 'Mech takes structure damage and takes critical hit tests. In Alpha Strike you won't know if it was the left or right knee actuator that was damaged; but, you will know that your movement is slowed for the balance of the game.

The procedures used in Alpha Strike allow players to control more 'Mechs. Therefore larger battles can be fought in a shorter amount of time without overwhelming the players. I believe Alpha Strike does this without losing the fidelity to the BattleTech universe. Playing Alpha Strike still feels like BattleTech to me.

I and my friends are playing Alpha Strike using the standard Catalyst Game Lab produced 'Mechs that come in the BattleTech Introductory boxes and in their Alpha Strike Lance boxes. We also use several figures from Ironwind Metals. These figures are around 1/285 to 1/300 scale, or 6mm.

These are scaled down to about 1/600 or 3mm scale. Since they are about half the scale of the larger 'Mechs, I plan on gaming with these using centimeters rather than inches and game in a smaller area.
